- If you wish to use the Infared communication device, there are 5 steps that you will
need to perform.
First: you must setup your Serial Port in
the CMOS BIOS to enable the Infared device. To setup:
- 1. Press the DEL key when the system boots to enter the CMOS setup
- 2. Select Integrated Peripherals
- 3. Scroll to the Serial Port 2 and enable it to: 2F8 IRQ3
- 4. Scroll down one to the UART2 MODE and change to: IRDA FIR
- 5. Exit, Save and Reboot.
- 6. Upon Reboot, Windows will find the new device and configure it automatically. If you
do not enable the serial port as a IrDA, then you will not see the drivers for the v3.0
Fast Infared
- Note: If you plan on using an extenal modem, you will need to change this port back to
MODEM unless you use a PCMCIA modem which can auto configure to a different port. (e.g.
COM4, IRQ5 or anything compatible).
Second: In the Windows 98 Control Panel
go to: System, Device Manager and see if your system has installed the IrDA v3.0
Fast Infared Port. The correct settings should be exactly as below:
- Infared Devices: Infared Communication Device
- Ports: Virtual Infared COM port, Virtual Infared LPT port
- Network Adapters:IrDA v3.0 Fast Infared Port, DialUp Adapter
- Remove any references to "Generic Infared Serial or Dangle" or "Infared
PnP Serial Port (*0510)" they are not needed.
Third: Go into the Control Panel, select
Networks then select the Fast Irda v3.0 device. Enable the file and/or Print
Sharing. Next select Properties. You will need to change the Advanced Properties as
explained below.
Change both the Infared Transceiver A and B to be: "Temic TFDS-6000" as
shown below. Select Ok, then exit. The system will request to reboot. -Reboot.
Fourth: Once the system reboots, you will
notice the Infared icon in the system tray near the clock. It continously flashes green
and red as it searchs for other IrDA devices to talk to.
Click on this icon and the IrDA Monitor will appear. If it finds a device to talk to it
will be listed here. You can also access this monitor from within the Control Panel,
Infared. Note: For best results, try to place the IrDA devices as close as possible.
Also go into the indentification and give the computer a unique name.
Fifth: To transfer files, it is very simple. If
all is connected properly and you can see the other device in the IrDA monitor, select the
file(s) that you wish to transfer from any application, then right click. At the menu
select "Send To, Infared Recepient". You will see the transfer monitor
displayed as the files are being copied. Once transfered, the files will be in a "My
Received" folder. That's all there is to it!
